Don’t be scared — you too can decolonize your business! Yesterday I came down with a near-fatal case of “it’s too hard.” Everything was wrong. Everyone was making me mad, including myself. My bestie didn’t accept my last-minute paddleboarding invite because she had improv class. Rude! My boyfriend did not run over to my house immediately after I told him my day was “perfectly fine,” even though I obviously needed him to drop everything and bring Doritos tout de suite. I opened Instagram and could not resist clicking on Shoshanna Raven’s latest screenshot of her Stripe account, where she makes more money in three hours than I did last month. (Ugh! I’m unbelievably annoyed at this girlboss performance, and also I can’t look away.) You could say I was having one of those classic “loser days.” But then I remembered something. I’ve been working on a lesson for The School of Consent-Based Business (<-- link to the waitlist list! Hold while I think up some special bonus just for those who add themselves to it!) about the idea of “decolonizing business.” Scary words for some people! Stick with me! I need to re-teach this lesson to myself because I keep forgetting what it is and why it’s important. Maybe you forgot too. Just one aspect of decolonized business is expecting seasonality. Seasonality is normal in business, and you can make space for it. There will be times when everything is easy and flowing, and times when it feels like running uphill with weights on your ankles. There will be times when you feel confident enough to make a new hire, and times when you stay up late making an emergency “plan B” list of all the people who could potentially hire you. Expect that. Plan for that. Hearts and bodies are seasonal too. Today I’m having an “I can do anything” day, where possibilities are visible all around me. Yesterday not so much. It cannot be eternal summer, much as the Shosannas of the world would have us believe otherwise. If you get stuck on that belief, you’re going to have a lot more loser days, and waste a lot of energy punishing yourself for an average everyday symptom of being human. I hope this helps. I hope you go easier on yourself a bit more next time it happens. I hope your business doesn’t die from a fatal case of “I can’t do it.” You can do it, Reader. …and it’s totally normal to have days when you forget. With love + patience, Tarzan
What could make me happier than seeing two of my clients, Kendra Hoffman and Zoe Gillis, pair up to create an experience? It’s an event for people like us, who pour themselves into their work, and need time to step back, breathe, and find the spark again. Encounter The Wild Unknown is a day-long nature retreat to get curious and listen for what wants to emerge. You'll be guided through:
Take the time to wander and wonder about what might be next, with two incredible guides.
